Unintentional Injuries: Prevention, Safety, and First Aid
Unintentional injuries are those injuries that are not inflicted purposely and that occur without intent of harm. These unplanned events can include falls, motor vehicle crashes, and poisoning. Unintentional injuries are a serious public health threat.
There are many ways to prevent unintentional injuries, including:
- Being aware: Be alert and look for problems early.
- Following safety rules: Follow safety guidelines and rules for your family.
- Installing safety devices: Install smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, safety locks, and handrails.
- Maintaining equipment: Maintain heating equipment and unplug extra heaters when sleeping.
- Using electrical appliances safely: Unplug electrical appliances when not in use and check cords for fraying.
- Being safe around water: Learn how to swim, teach children to swim, and place fences around home pools. Wear life jackets when participating in water activities.
- Being safe in vehicles: Use car seats, booster seats, and seat belts properly. Always wear a helmet when riding a bicycle or motorcycle. Don't drive under the influence of alcohol.
- Being safe with guns: If you have a gun in your home, keep it unloaded, not cocked, and locked up. Store ammunition in a separate locked location.
Wear the correct safety equipment at home, work, or play.
Always insist that all car passengers wear seat belts.
Be sure that children are restrained in car seats correctly.
Make sure children ages 12 and younger are always seated in the rear seat.
